Actually, you need a good fast lens and a camera that is capable of shooting at higher ISO's with the lowest amount of noise. Good zoom is good too, so you can capture the kids at a distance and get more natural pictures.

Well actually Greg I was a little annoyed when I answered this question because it failed to explain in what situation. I was thinking about children posing.
