I have heard rumors that if you take a direct picture of the sun it can damage your camera. Is there any truth to that?

I don't know about that, but I recommend not looking through the viewfinder when taking pics of the sun, as I am sure it can do serious damage to your retina. I know I have taken multitude of pictures of sunsets and sunrizes, without incident, although the intensity of the sun at those times is probably a lot less than midday. I have heard that if you are taking pictures to get images of sunspots, etc, then there are special foil filters that you should use to prevent damage. Is your camera a film camera or a digital camera? and what type of sun pictures are you planning on taking? - I think it all is common sense, but finding the properties of light sensitive diods, etc may provide the answer you are seeking if it is digital. Personally I would not want to test it out to verify especially during midday sun.
