Nikon D90 - Video

As most of you know I bought a Nikon D90 a few months ago. I hadn’t really gotten the chance to use the video portion of the camera untill Christmas day. here are my notes on the D-movie mode- the video is nice and crisp and while it does shoot slower @ 24fps than most camcorders and even the Canon 5D mark II, I cannot really see any glitches while watching the clip. another down fall is you can only shoot for 5min. although, if you are really trying to shoot sequences to be strung together in post production, it really is not going to be a problem. besides how many people do you know that film for a solid 5 minutes with out changing angles or  even changing to another camera? Another issue I had was the lack of auto focus in D-movie mode, it would take some serious getting used to, to be able to focus just right on a moving subject as you will see in the video below. The last issue I have is the mono audio, while this can be changed in post production, it really takes a genious to do.

all in all this is a great camera for just about any situation you get into. is it worth it to spend an extra $1400 on a Canon that solves most of these issues, for general use I would say no. For the professional videographer, probably not, because more than likely you already own a great video camera. although i look forward to seeing Nikon fix these issues with the next model.

Seems fine to me - probably, as you said if you were a video photographer you would want to upgrade..
    BTW I wouldn’t want to be your Rott’s tire…:-)

One thing I wonder about these cameras are if the ccd going to burn up faster, because I don’t think they are made to hand it (maybe that is why only 5 minutes can be recorded at a time) only time will tell.

so far so good, I have talked to alot of people that use the it regularly and they seem to have no issues. plus the camera is rated for 100,000 shutter releases. but again we’ll see.

100,000 releases that would only be about 10 jobs for me? oh no :)
  • john101477 responded:
it is rated the same as the D300 and D700.

Length of video is usually a function of memory capacity. So what capacity of memory card is the five-minute limit based on?
  • john101477 responded:
the 5minute videl actually has to do with the sensor. it has an issue with getting hot. the memory is actually not really bad as far as space. I think i took 4 5minute videos and about 200 pics with my 2gb card and it wasn’t full yet

You must be shooting JPG pics… and possibly not the largest scale? I get ~180 RAWs on a 2Gb card.
  • john101477 responded:
yeah just high jpg’s it was only for xmas. I am not sure i even get 180 with a 2gb card. the one thing on this camera is the file size. the sizes are pretty large compared to my 10mp canon.
on the flip side i bought me a 1TB external hard drive to store all my pics.

    opps I may of missed a 0.
Maybe One of these days they may need to put a cooling system just for the ccd. :)

Lol there’s an idea better put a patent on it lol.

Stop down your iris. That way most things are in focus anyway.
