I have a problem with my D200. Occasionally when I am either in manual or aperture priority mode, I will take a shot, the shutter hangs open and I get an error message. Most times the only way to revive the camera is to take the batteries out replacing them a minute or two later. I have upgraded my firmware to the latest version, the only other thing I can think of is a faulty circuit somewhere.

Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone perhaps point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

What count is your odometer on? Could be the shutter is wearing out. I think the D200 is good for 100,000 exposures on average. Could there be a blockage in the shutter mechanism that needs to be cleaned out? Is the camera still in warranty? If so, I would send it to Nikon to have them take a look at it. If it is too old, I would have cleaned at a shop. If it is a circuit error, you are probably looking at a good deal of money to repair it.

I've been experiencing the exact same problem The only thing that seems to be working for me however is shooting with the MB-D200 (Battery Pack). When shooting with a single battery (EN-EL3E) the problem occurs. When shooting with the MB-D200, the problem goes away.

I got that ERR messege the first time when I tried to take the picture of my son with the camera facing vertically down. I think the camera/shutter does not like that and it started happening ever since. Very frustrating!

I had a similar problem, but I figured out that ONE OF MY BATTERIES in the grip, was SOMETIMES shorting out! It shows as 100-92% full, but after I put in 2 brand new batteries the problem went away!
So try that and see if the problem is one of your batteries.
Second problem could be a corroded (oxidized) CONTACT on the grip. CLEAN BOTH ENDS first with a NEW PENCIL ERASER and than a Q-TIP (longer kind, or add a small plastic or wooden extension to the existing q-tip) dipped in alcohol inside the camera and the grip connectors.
What happens is that the metal oxidises and makes a connection that sometimes makes a "electrical pause" (in miliseconds).
Than clean the same way the contacts on the batteries and inside the battery compartment using same technique as above.
They sell at Radio Shack a special cleaning solution that makes a better connections and protects (the second liquid in the cleaning kit) the metal connections.
Also, try to use just one battery without using the battery grip and see if 2 or more batteries do the same think.
The last think is to try a friends battery grip and see if you have the same problem or it goes away!

I had this problem as well, with MB-D200. I figured out that one of my battery wan not strong enough to support shutter/mirror motor. As soon as i replaced the faulty battery, problem dissapeared.
FYI: I have cca 5000 shutter actuations on my odometr, my D200 is like new.
