You will need to find out the make and model of the camera as lenses do not cross fit onto other bodies, unless they use adapters, etc , - so you definitely don't want to be buying the incorrect one. You mentioned that your wife has just started in the photography biz - Is there a particular type of photography that she is doing ? Like portraits, close up shots of objects, Like flowers, jewelery, etc. This will help if you are looking for macro lenses, wide angle lenses , zoom lenses, etc. Unfortunately good lenses are rather pricey and you will find that is the part that may people spend most of their investments in. I would definitely find out the lenses she already has, and if possible find the speed of the lenses (F# capabilities)
Other suggestions for you to consider would be:
Filters - polorized, ND, etc - These add special lighting capabilities or clarity to captures.
Tri-pod, monopod, This will allow the camera to be held steady for capturing images of good quality
Remote trigger devices , Camera needs to be able to receive a signal, but this allows you to capture a shot whilst not holding the camera.
Memory Cards - The medium which stores the images temporarly before you place them on a computer.
Does she have some imaging software that she can edit her images with - There are several out there, one common one is called Adobe Photoshop.
Accessories - Backpack so she can trek with her equipment, Cleaning brushes, cloths, etc to help keep the ust off the equipment.
Flash Lighting - this attaches to the camera to provide additional light on the subject.
Hope this helps - If it were my wife , - I would definitely ask her what she would be looking for and maybe give her some suggestions from here or she may already have a particular lens in mind that she has had here eye on for a while, just didn't have final few dollars to make that purchase.
Post here if you need clarification or more ideas.
