Something I don’t know a whole lot about is night photography.

Andy Frazer on the other hand, author of Night Photography Blog obviously does. I am on the other hand always on the look out for more great photography books and Andy has a couple of recommendations for night photography books.

The first is Troy Paiva’s second book, Night Vision: The Art of Urban Exploration, which was selected as best trade book in the recent NY book festival, which great, and the second is a book called Night shift, by Lynn Saville, and from what I have seen it looks awesome.

William H. Johnson Foundation Grant

From PDN

In honor of the late painter, the William H. Johnson Foundation for the Arts is seeking pioneering young artists working in one or more of the following mediums: painting, photography, sculpture, printmaking, installation and/or new genre.

In 1926, William H. Johnson was acknowledged as the most talented artist in his class at New York’s National Academy of Design; however, he was passed over for a traveling scholarship most likely because of his race. Rather than see Johnson flounder in the United States, his teacher at that time, Charles Hawthorne, gifted Johnson $1,000 so that he could travel to Europe and escape the prejudices of the American art scene.

In the spirit of this remarkable act of generosity, the William H. Johnson Foundation seeks to award the most deserving of African-American artists early in their careers with the substantial amount of $25,000, in the hopes that this gift will have the same pivotal effect on a burgeoning artist today as it did on the young Johnson.

Past Johnson Prize Winners include Laylah Ali (2002); Nadine Robinson (2003); Kori Newkirk (2004); Dave McKenzie (2005); Edgar Arceneaux (2006); Rodney McMillian (2007); and Jennie C. Jones (2008). Their winning submissions can be viewed on the Foundation Web site.

Mrs Dean wrote portrait therapy: the face as a mini studio commenting on artist in the like of Levi van Veluw who use their faces or faces of others as way to show different materials. Great photo’s, though I wouldn’t want to cover my face in snails - if you are looking for inspiration or things to mull over - read Mrs Deans post.

Juliana tells us about Shen Wei’s Limited Book Edition I must say I am curious. Apparently Shen approaches total strangers and unlikely subjects, asking them to pose in the nude or near nude. Its enough to make me want to be a fly on the wall when he approaches them…

I‘ve Got a Scanner And I am Going To Use It Continued is a though evoking post by Colin Pantall, British based photographer, about the art of scanning (never really given it much thought myself) and its possibilities… it is a continuation of How Not To Photograph: I’ve Got a Scanner and I’m Going To Use It. I found it most amusing (and quite British)

Dennis Dunleavy posted Subtle Forms and Features a philosophical post about photographers and there observation translation process. Interesting read.
