In buying a flash for a canon camera, is it important for the flash to be canon as well? would I lose on some of the functionality with another brand? I have a Canon 5D Mk.1 and have been thinking about the Canon 430 flash gun, or something similar.

The 430ex is a good general purpose flash unit. I would stay with the Canon brand to assure compatibility with the functions of the 5d. Should you later choose to sell the 430 to upgrade, it will have a higher resale value than a third party flash. The 430 can also be used as a slave unit if you upgrade to a newer, larger Canon flash unit.
