Hello, I am new here, and I have been searching all over creation for help with this. I have always been interested in the beautiful technique of beauty pageant head shot photos. I love the glass doll eye look, and I cant seem to find anything online to help me do this to my own photos. Can anyone point me in the right direction?? Ive been messing on PS for a while now, but ofcoarse, since i cant go to a class or anything, i am not that wonderful at it...but these edits would be for my own personal collection, and just an activity for me to pass the time with.

I am attaching a picture that I found online, that shows in a way what I am talking about. I dont mean all the makeup, That scares me...but I mean how smooth the skin looks, now neat the hair is, and the eyes- how they look like they are part of a china doll. I would love to learn that effect, its very interesting to me. Thank you!!

Link to one of your photos or post one and I will walk you through it as if you were in one of my classes.

It is not very hard, but not too easy either. Which version of PS did you buy?

Please tell us you're kidding, Curtis.

Considering that this is the type of work you crank out:

...you shouldn't be leading anyone else through photo editing.

The general concept of photo editing -- when someone asks you to improve the picture -- is to improve the picture, not make it look worse. You have yet to post a photo that reveals any degree of competency in you as a photographer or a postproduction editor.

The more the merrier you oncesaid?

I see you bringing a dead cat photo here and putting it in another thread and asserting that it was done by me. It appears to be my attempt to make the dieing cat look healthier. I ask that you compare apples to apples. The OP asked for the cat to look better and that is what I did. #3 above was my alteration and number #2 was yours. You claimed #3 was am example of my skill from the other thread. It was where you also claimed to welcome others to attempt. The OP stated they wanted the cat to look less sick and there is no question as to whether it is in 1, 2,or 3. In your attempt, the added "catch lights" and "corrected" color temperature do nothing the OP requested.

The OP requested board members help make the cat look better! Not the photographer.
I would really like someone to make him look less... sick? Fix his coat if possible, brighten his eyes?....

The "warm" color temperature which I left adds intimacy your evidence photo removes. We already knew the cat was dieing and were not asked for evidence. The reflections of an imaginary light source you added simply look fake and fly against the evidential look you were otherwise doing. The main light source was obviously above the cat and to the rear. The shadows you left conflict with your imaginary light. The finger did not appear to touch and actually gives the impression that the hand was either about to pet the cat or was just leaving. Not seeing the finger lets our minds put the arm cuddling the cat.

You have stated a contention of accidentally harassing me and alleged that it was not your intent to harass me. The allegation that you had only posted on threads behind me as a matter of coincidence may have held up to the jury until now. This post of yours demonstrates without any doubt to a reasonable juror that you went to an unrelated thread and cross-posted a photograph and then expressed that I had no skills at photography or at post-production based on your judgment. You have gone out of your way to harass me by name and these posts will be prima facia evidence supporting a summary judgment. You are aware that I sued NameMedia for cybersquatting domains I once owned? {Neeley v. NameMedia, Inc. - 5:2009cv05151} Are you aware that they filed an IPO for 172.5 million dollars? They alleged they made around 40 million dollars last year and publicly state that $2,300 of those were from one domain of mine they cybersquatted and then sold. Had I been aware of this admission I would have already sought a summary judgment. I plan to sue Robert Gates as soon as I am done with NameMedia or have time. You may begin working on a defense. This on not a threat. It is a statement that I intend to sue after I get more time and more money. Almost nothing you can do now will cause or will prevent the lawsuit. I contacted San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office tonight and they asked I call my local police since the harassing was happening here. I spoke with the local Fayetteville City Police, They took a report and gave me incident number <2009-80828>. I will give this as evidence of my distress when we go to trial. They recorded this forum post URL and your harassment of me was recorded. I have stored every post where you harassed me. I made them aware that there was no physical threat whatsoever. They said that this would best be resolved as a civil matter although they were documenting it tonight. The prosecuting attorney will look into it next week. I was asked by Police to report it to a moderator here. I responded that I have already reported it several times with no results.
------------------------------------------------------- -----
I will not acknowledge another harassing post that is malicious or intentionally distressing. I only post this to rebut your last criticism.
======================================================= =
I have done commercial photography for the worlds largest company.
My commercial portfolio makes my skill level obvious.

Need an example of digital manipulation?

-------------------------------------------------------
This one shot shows attention to detail that demonstrates my post-production skill. It was not raining. I used a water hose and numerous exposures throughout the night and day. This was all done on a Bronica GS1 medium format film camera. I once considered a 35mm only a toy. Before digital, it WAS.

I see on your website no weddings? I have done three from a wheelchair with one arm! I no longer do them. I removed all the photos from my site that I did before my disability. Why? They would reflect a skill level that I no longer have. I have a degree in photography that I am unable to remember getting. Compared to the children and wives who I do not remember, forgetting my photo degree is trivial.

I plan to sue you now. Please stop harassing me. I asked you stop once already. Continuing will only increase the amount of the damages. You are guilty of intentionally inflicting emotional distress already. There is no question that will require a jury trial.
Please just stop harassing me.
I should not need to leave the forum to avoid you.

The photo I linked was the edited version you posted as your own work. Are you saying that you posted someone else's work without attribution? Sayyy, that could get you sued!

I don't do weddings. I don't pretend to. Neither should you.

I have done three from a wheelchair with one arm! I no longer do them.

Good thing you've stopped. Those two weddings were some of the worst work I've ever seen. But far worse than the wedding photos, you tried defending your awful work by reminding the bride and groom about the divorce rates in this country. I'm not the only photographer who considers that a monumentally ill-advised strategy.

I plan to sue you now.

Oh, what a surprise.

Are you also going to sue the forum when you get your account chopped?

It's ironic that you blew in here with a disclaimer giving yourself a get-out-of-jail-free card for blunt and abusive behavior, but you claim total victimhood when someone treats you at all bluntly.

You shouldn't have to leave the forum to avoid me, but neither should you be allowed to behave as badly as you have. You've been trolling for abuse since the getgo. Greg tried to speak to you man-to-man, reminding you that you had the choice to be part of the community or not. How'd you react? By trolling to the point of meltdown and openly challenging the mods. Dumb. Just plain dumb.

See ya in court, Clarence Darrow.

I do not think I challenged a moderator publicly and yes, I will sue the moderator of the forum if I get my account chopped. I will sue Greg as a person colluding with you and acting in tandem. The forum is just a site being used to get advertising and not being run personally by the domain owner. If I am "chopped" you will not see me posting, but I will not be gone. Please stop harassing me anyway. It causes me a vast amount of distress intentionally.

Curtis, you have far too much time on your hands.

Acey, there are a couple of key and basic techniques used in your sample photo that adds to the effect you're probably looking for.

The first is the lighting. The photographer placed the main light directly in front of the face thus eliminating the shadows. Most portrait photographers avoid this because shadows are what adds depth to a portrait. But in this case, it gives the photo more of a two-dimensional look and also helps fill and eliminate blemishes.

The second thing is that it looks like the photographer carefully edited out any and all blemishes. This gives the skin a very uniform tone and adds to the "china doll" look of this photo.

I hope this helps.

In addition to the steps Steve suggested, that kind of complexion requires a total elimination of lines and deep contours around the mouth, nose and eyes. In Photoshop, that can be done with the cloning brush and/or the healing tool. Once the lines are cleaned off, then use the Blur tool to smooth the skin further. Don't use Gaussian Blur to the layer -- that's too general in scope. Very locally, blur the skin alone.

Zara,
I hope you realize this post is 4 1/2 months old. Most of the posters in this thread appear to be no longer actively posting here.

Please don't let this single post discourage you from participating on this forum. There still are many good, knowledgeable posters here.
