How would you photograph a catalog of lizards? I know its a strange question, but I have been asked by a friend to do this for her (she is a breeder) (and I have a camera ) what background would you use, and how would you set this up? I tried yesterday, using a black sheet on the back of her couch, and obviously that didn't work... so anyone who has some wise words for me - please share. thanks.

I think Lizards like warm surfaces as they are cold blooded, so keeping them under lights should keep them fairly calm and still. If you have any granite rock or slate from your nearest gardening shop, could add some more natural setting for them to be photographed against/on. i.e. setup your scene and leave the lights on so the stone warms to a comforatble temperature.

As your friend is a breeder, she may know what environment the lizards prefer and what do people who are buying them thinking in respect of looking after them, i.e. just taking a clean shot of the lizard against a neutral background may be good for showing the markings and species, but the people who are buying them may be more enticed by seeing a more natural background.

I do know that my local petshop who does sell lizards , chamelions, etc does have environmental backings that would normally go behind an aquarium / glass house for the reptiles, which may be worth looking at and are fairly inexpensive ( Like wallpaper for their homes).

Good Ideas! Thanks. I think I will try the slightly warm slate. I have been thinking that I might use a soft box to defuse the light a bit. I am sure that the heat will still penetrate.
