What would be an essential accessory after purchasing a DSLR?

In my opinion I would say that a Dolica UV and CPL Filter would be ideal. My initial reason for getting a filter is to protect my lens.

What are your uses for the camera? A UV filter is unneeded in my opinion, but there is a large school of thought that swears by them. It is a personal choice. Using a polarizing filter is great if you are a landscape photographer. Its worthless if you are into sports photography. Not to mention that a good polarizer will be well over $100.00...like three to four times that.

Best accessory for under $100 is another battery so you can swap them out for continuous shooting.

I would like to use the DSLR for multiple reasons. I have a few friends that would like me to take a couple of outdoor shots of them. Would the UV or CPL filter be ideal for these photo shoots?

The UV may help you with contrast but I don't use filters for portrait photos.Except for some soft focus stuff now and again.. A CPL is great for landscapes....

A UV filter does nothing for the filter at all. The coatings on the lens will actually filter the UV rays, as will the filters on the sensor itself. Unless you just want to protect the lens element from physical damage there is no need in having one.
