I have a question, I am trying to decide between a canon 50D or a canon eos T1i .. I know the price is quite a bit of difference.. but I am really leaning towards the canon eos T1i and have heard some good things about it .. I would like to hear from someone that has or has used either of these cameras.

The biggest difference will be with the durability of the body. The 50D uses more substantial materials, and the body is weather sealed. The shutter is designed for heavier use than the Rebel as well.

If you plan on being gentle with your camera and don't have the need for the extra life on the shutter then you will be fine with the Rebel.

One other consideration...hold each body before you purchase. For me, the Rebel line feels cheap and not very well balanced. the 40D that I use fits perfect, and the ergonomics are much better for my hands.

The best use of your money will be in the glass that you choose to use.

i used a rebel for quite a while and it turned me off a canon although i with the higher end models my issues would not have been issues at all. i personally would never buy another rebel.

I also looked at, checked out, played with and held the Rebel before I bought my 40D. I think I must have driven the girls at Best Buy crazy for all the times I was in there checking out both cameras.

As Greg said, the Rebel felt cheap to me also. And to me, the 40D was just easier to use and it did feel better in my hands. I love the 40D. Now, my honey bought the 50D and he couldn't be happier with it. I've only used it a time or two, but both the 40D and the 50D are great cameras.

If you're on a tight budget and want great pictures, if you have small hands, or if you intend to upgrade within the year I'd go for the Rebel. It's a good back-up camera and although it does feel cheaper it takes quality pictures.

When I upgraded last year I went for the 40D and while I love it - it does my girlfriend no good. My fiance has always been my second shooter and is stuck using the rebel even after upgrading again because her hands don't fit around the 40D with a flash bracket and battery grip attached. Now the 40D is my "nightclub" camera - the one that gets drinks splashed on it.

Thanks so much for all that great info.. I did purchase the canon eos T1i and so far I am very happy with it .. since mine is used for hobby.. I felt that this would be good for me..I am looking for all the pointers I can get though.. again thanks! I would just like to add that all these responses have greatly helped me .. for I have small hands and after reading some of these I did for curiosity go and check out the 50D and I would not have been happy with it because the weight and holding it would have been a problem.. thanks again

Don't be discouraged by the (edited out for poor form by admin) above. I use a T1i and love it. If you put a battery grip on it, it fits the hand fine. It is a much better camera than they (above) claim it to be. I'm very satisfied with my T1i. It has some of the same electronics as the 50D (i.e. same sensor, same mgpxl, same lcd screen) and it also has a HD video, which the $2600 new 5D has. It is a bargain!!!

This is going to sound crazy - but how do I get the T1i to take HD video? I put it on the video/movie camera setting on the dial, and no video....

Yes, I am a beginner and I am sure I'm gonna feel dumb - but whatever....

Thanks in advance!

I hate to sound short, but you are the one with the owner's manual. I have no idea other than what you have said in your post....that and to press the shutter button.

Well, thanks. The book didn't help too much. Pushing the shutter button was my problem - I needed to be pressing the "record" button.

Look to the top right of your LCD screen, there are 2 buttons right there, the second one with the little red circle is the record button. Go to video mode, click that button and you're recording!

T1i is great for amateurs, 50D is great for amateurs thinking about becoming pros. I think that's the difference right there.

Cheers!

I use a canon 50d on a pap strap with a 70-200 is usm lens and the camera does not let me down. It has a very fast cycle time, even with the big lens. I love it and would recommend it.

don't know about the other one in question, sorry.

I don't know why i always see people saying the rebel is too small. We have all used point and shoot cameras(which are much smaller yet). I have huge hands, can hardly ever find leather ranch gloves that fit, have to find xxl gloves. My t2i feels very comfortable in my hands and never feels"too small" In fact i have held several friends d90's,50d and 70d, they feel bulky and too big to me. The thought that my t2i feels cheap has never entered my mind. I will always pay more for the quality stuff, but didn't need to. The t2i felt very good to me it and wasn't a cheap feeling. One semi-pro photographer friend said the same things some have said here about the rebel line. Funny, he said the exact same thing verbatim, lol. Could it be true people just say what they are programmed to say because a "pro" said it or they are reading these boards too? If you look at a camera with the thought in mind everyone says its too small and feels cheap, you will come to that conclusion as well, even if its not true. In my case i looked at it, felt it touched it played with it and i didn't come to those conclusions. I always take special care of my electronics. I just gave my canon sd100 digital elph to my daughter. I bought it 10 years ago, its been shot 10's of thousands of time and still looks new, same with my elph sd600 and my dimage z6( i like the size of this one the best.
I went to Colombia south America twice last year for 3 weeks at a time visiting in-laws with my wife and step kids. Christmas is awesome in Medellin and i took hundreds of pics with the above mentioned cameras. I wish i would have had my t2i on those trips. I will have it with me when we go back in June and Christmas again. The rebel line is a quality product
