The best idea ever for lazy bums like me! The wireless photo transmission between a digital camera and a computer/printer.
Photos have the tendency to stay on my camera for a long time. Instead of just walking a couple of feet from the camera to my computer, they sort of have their residence on the memory card in my camera. When I evict them from their home every once in a while, I feel sort of guilty. But if pictures should be seen, it is better to get them out there.
So what is going on?
- Digital storage is cheap. My SD cards can keep thousands of photos, and I rarely have too little memory. The downside of this is that I never have to remove the photos off the card.
- My laptop computer is old. It’s from 2002, but old enough for the battery to be worn down. It takes a long time for my software to open, because I have a lot of on my photo storage software. I need a new computer, but I can’t afford it.
- I don’t like cords and adapters. I can never find them when I need them. That means that the photos stay on the camera for a long time.
My brother always used an old-fashioned Polaroid for this reason. It has ten shots in a film roll, and the print is the only image you will get. If you would use a Polaroid instead of a digital camera you would only take worthwhile photos and think long before you would take one. If I could share these photos on the Internet, that would be amazing! Maybe they should start selling very very low-capacity memory card, so that you can organize your digital life better.
So, I could buy a new computer, get a bigger memory card or I can buy a new camera with wireless data transfer. It’s a really simple feature, but I can see the big effect it can have. Yesterday I read a review of Canon SD430 camera and the Kodak Easyshare One that has the feature to move your images via WIFI to your printer/computer, even while you are making a shot. For Kodak you need a special adapter. Shame that Canon made it work only for Windows XP though.
There are a few other cameras that give you this new feature. I hope this feature will become standard in the future. I prefer wireless transfer than bigger pictures or a better zoom lens any day.
I also heard about Wireless USB at a trade show this year, which is supposed to be some kind of wireless data connection that comes instead of regular USB. This way or Canon’s way, I would make me happy with moving photos off of your camera wirelessly.
