Here's a hummingbird shot from this weekend. I'm still trying to figure out how to get a better hummingbird shot but I've got all summer and part of fall until they leave me again to figure it out. Here's a start though. These are my most favorite creature on the planet. I just love these little birds!

I think that is the first time I have seen them with their wings still...I didn't know that was possible.

The girls are alot more calm than the boys. These are females. The boys seem to be much more skittish and they don't hold still for very long at all :-O I do have one of a boy holding still from last year in Oregon. I think it was an Anna's hummingbird. We only get the ruby throated here in Virginia. I was pretty far away when I took this one and had to crop in alot on the computer.

Great shot Wildflower. I can't get a hummingbird to come to my house.

For what I have heard about the male hummingbird is that the sound that they make with their wings "HMMM" attract the female birds. I don't know for fact just something I have heard. If that is the case I understand why they don't sit still.

Hmmmmmmm

I like especially the second photo. Can't really explain why I like it better than the first, but it has to do with the bird's colors and the background

Beautiful shot Wildflower. I like the 2nd shot best too. Because of the angle it is almost as if it is "from the birds point of view".

thanks everyone. I think the 2nd one is the one I like better too, it seemed to have a little more detail. And for starimage, I'm not sure if that is true or not about the wings buzzing, I think they may just make that sound when they fly anyways because they beat so fast. I have seen them do their courtship dance though, it's amazing! They fly up and down in this arc kind of like a big U and they fly frontwards and backwards!! :-O They are quite the little acrobats and do go to great lengths to impress their ladies

P.S. If you want to attract them to your house get some flowers that they like. If you get fushia hanging baskets, they love those. They also love red flowers like geraniums and red petunias, red salvias, red or pink impatiens. You can also get hummingbird feeders pretty cheap too. I got the one in the picture for around $5.00 at Walmart. To make their food you use 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. I make about a cup at a time so that's 1/4 cup of sugar to 1 cup of water. I boil it in the microwave for about 3 or 4 minutes and then when it's cooled to room temp I fill the feeder.
